FMTC to Expand into Rural Ontario

An exciting Fiber to the Home (FTTH) project is happening in the rural Ontario area powered by Farmers Mutual Telephone Company (FMTC).
Proudly serving the local area for 117 years, FMTC strives to bring the latest communications technology for the betterment of local communities. As part of the State of Oregon Broadband Offices’ recent grant award announcement, Farmers Mutual Telephone Company will be bringing fiber optic Internet infrastructure to rural areas outside of Ontario, Oregon. Coverage will extend north of Nyssa, through Cairo Junction and northward toward the Ontario Bench. This funding is made available through the federal Capital Projects Fund and will enable fiber optic coverage in an unserved and underserved portion of Oregon. We are excited to bring you the latest fiber optic technology to support remote work and education, streaming TV, telehealth and more.

Farmers construction works digging to lay cableThe Oregon Broadband Office recently announced Notices of Intent to Award for nearly $133,000,000 through the Broadband Deployment Program (BDP). Farmers Mutual Telephone Company (FMTC) will receive $18.9 Million of those funds, allowing fiber optic internet to be brought to over 900 locations in rural Malheur County, just outside of Ontario, Oregon. This project ensures that unserved and underserved residents within the project area will have access to broadband internet with access to broadband internet with Multi-Gigabit speeds available.

Farmers installing cableFunds have been made available as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund (CPF). Funding provides for the construction and deployment of fiber optic internet through FMTC. Broadband internet infrastructure assists in the growth of business and allows households access to telehealth, streaming and gaming, advances in agriculture and connects us to a world of possibilities.

FMTC contractors are now beginning the process of identifying and staking the route for this project in rural Ontario. FMTC General Manager, Ron Rembelski is looking forward to the expansion, stating, “FMTC is honored to have our grant application funded! We are dedicated to providing the best broadband internet service using a state-of-the-art fiber network.” Construction will begin this year and be completed in 2026.

Fiber to the Home Installation Process

STAGE 1: A REPRESENTATIVE FROM FMTC WILL BE CONTACTING YOU
Prior to fiber being brought from the road to your home, an independent engineer or contractor will be contacting you to
discuss the upgrade to fiber.

STAGE 2: INSTALLATION OF THE CONDUIT
Fiber crews will install conduit approximately 24″ deep from the road to your home.

STAGE 3: FIBER SPLICING
Fiber optics will be pulled through the conduit and will be spliced in preparation of bringing this service to your home.

STAGE 4: FIBER INSTALL APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING
An FMTC team member will contact you to schedule an install at a time and date that is convenient for you.

STAGE 5: INSTALLATION
Technicians will arrive at your home on the time and date previously scheduled. This is the last step in the process and your
phone and Internet services will now be provided through fiber

Will fiber installation cause damage?

FMTC and its contractors will make every effort to avoid any damage or disturbance on your property. If issues arise, they will be taken care of promptly.
